Week 7 - Election Day

Week 7's Newsday was the day of the general election. The day started off with preparing some questions for the general public to ask the newly elected leader. Myself and Andy went out to report at some polling stations in Sunderland. With no one willing to speak to us, we tried Sunderland city centre and got one person to speak to us. He focused more on one party instead of the election as a whole. Next time we would have to tell him to re-do this.

We also managed to get an interview with some labour campaigners walking the streets, the labour candidate would not speak on camera, so instead we got one the campaigners to speak about the election instead. I decided to tweet this to SRNews as I thought it would be good for the social media editor to retweet to show what the reporters were up to.

Week 5 & 6

On week 5&6 of Newdays I was absent in the media hub, but still contributed to the day by completing two online articles, one of which got published.  http://sr-news.com/2015/05/01/safety-warning-tyne-wear-fire-service-respond-33-kitchen-fires/ I got sent the press release from Northumbria fire service and had to take out the fire service lingo and shorten it down so it would be more suitable for a SR News audience. I think this is my best article I've written from the newsdays, it shows my online article writing skills. In particular I really thought about the title for this one, as my past articles the title has been changed because it didn't have key words in for the SEO.

My Week 5 article did not got published, it was on an arson attack on some Horse Stables in Sunderland. I also received a press release for this from Nortumbria Police, the press release didn't have much information in, so the article is very short but still has vital information in for the story.

Week 3

This week I was on the morning reporting shift. Myself and Cameron had been in the Hub since 9 o'clock researching stories ready for the morning bulletins. We found a news story about The Vaccines playing at Pop Recs the following week and got onto the phone to Pop Recs straight away. We got an interview with the drummer of Pop Recs so me and Cameron went to interview him. We arrived with questions already prepared so whilst Cameron filmed, I asked the interviewee the questions. The skills I had previously learnt from radio reporting helped me when interviewing the drummer from Pop Recs.

After interviewing him and getting back to the hub, I edited the audio into two separate files so it could be aired on two bulletins throughout the day. I sent the audio to an online news reporter so that they could write an article up for it. This also helped the newsreaders to refer back to the article when on air, meaning there was a more multi element platforms for the viewers.

The article including mine and Camerons audio is here http://sr-news.com/2015/03/23/vaccines-play-pop-recs-weekend/

Week 2.

Week 2 was the week when I was going to be news reading on Drive Time. I attended the 10am meeting as it was our first official Newsday,  just so that I could understand what was going to be happening throughout the day when I was not there and to understand what was going to be happening throughout the rest of the Newsdays.

I got back to the media hub at 2pm, an hour before my first news bulletin. The news copy was on Burli for 2.45 so that I had time to run through, before I went live. As it was my first time, Ethan did the mixing desk for me, so that I could concentrate on reading. I felt confident after my first news reading shift. Both me and Ethan went back up to the media hub to work with the afternoon reporters on getting some audio for the 4,5 and 6 o'clock bulletin as there had been no audio on the bulletins all day.

Things improved throughout the day, we had audio for the 5 and 6 o'clock bulletins thanks to the afternoon reporters. Being a drive time news reader, I also got the chance to find out how to find the information for traffic and travel and to be able to read them out at 5.45pm. I think being on drive time news for my first news reading shift gave me a lot of confidence to be able to do it again.

Week 1.

This week I got taught how to use Burli and the equipment in the news booth ready for my news reading shift the following week. I had a practice run through, reading a news story what had been broadcasted in the breakfast show. I think this was really important to do as sometimes I would be in the news booth on my own and would need to know how to use the equipment and software in there. Once I was confident enough on how to use Burli and the equipment I went back up to the MediaHub, to practice online writing which would be a critical part of my NewsDay shifts once they start.

I received a press release from the Northumbria Police about a shop theft in North Shields. http://sr-news.com/2015/03/06/north-shields-shop-theft-northumbria-police-release-cctv-images/ I had to remove the police lingo and use my style guide to write the article so that it was suitable for SRNews audience. The News Editor told me to change my title, as it didn't include key words for the SEO. I then posted the article into the Pending Review so that the news editor could check the article for me before posting it online.
